HIGHCROFT NEWS

Investors in People Status Renewed
Highcroft is pleased to announce that following a re-assessment by Quality South East, our prestigious Investor in People status has been renewed. Investor in People status is awarded to businesses who can demonstrate a high level of commitment to staff training, development and welfare. It must be shown that protocols such as annual staff appraisals are in place and are being carried out to a high standard. We were first awarded Investor in People status in 2004 and as far as we are aware we are the only veterinary practice in the south east to have achieved this standard.

Our practice manager and veterinary surgeon Carmel Giddins has recently completed an ABVA Foundation Course in veterinary acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The Chinese approach to disease is very holistic, and emotional, hereditary and environmental factors are considered important factors in disease patterns. The philosophy and aim of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to restore equilibrium between physical, emotional and spiritual factors, thus restoring and maintaining health. Treatment involves using needles in specific acupuncture points to achieve this balance, by addressing imbalances in Yin and Yang and the flow of Qi and Blood etc.

Western Scientific Approach.
The Western View of acupuncture is used predominantly in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and in particular chronic pain states in animals. A variety of other problems can also be helped. Nerves, muscles and acupuncture points are needled in the same spinal segments as the affected or painful area. Acupuncture stimulates the release of pain relieving chemicals in the brain and spinal cord (endorphins, serotonin, noradrenalin etc.), which produce more general pain relieving effects. These effects, combined with local needling of painful trigger points in taut muscle bands, results in exceptional relief of pain.

Carmel is available for morning consultations so please contact the surgery if you would like more information or if you feel that acupuncture may be of benefit to your pet.
